Look to Speak is an experimental utility for Android devices. This app allows people with speech and motor impairments to communicate using the movement of their eyes.
This application is a part of Experiments With Google, a collection of thousands of unusual and helpful utilities in various fields. Look to Speak is designed to help people who temporarily or permanently cannot talk nor use their fingers.
For this app to work, the device must be held still slightly below the eye level. The system displays several preset phrases on two sides of the screen. By looking offscreen left or right, it is possible to choose between them. After that, sentences from the selected field will be divided into two columns again. The process continues until the user picks the last phrase. Then the technology pronounces it aloud. Moreover, by looking up at any time, you can cancel the current selection and return to the main screen.
It is possible to edit the set of prewritten expressions by removing them or adding new ones. Additionally, different settings are available to suit the user better. However, the setup cannot be done with eye gaze.
For people who can use their fingers, a text to speech application like Speechify may be more convenient.
